What is Boxing Out in Basketball
Boxing out is a fundamental basketball technique where a player positions their body between an opponent and the basket to gain rebounding position.
Boxing out (also called blocking out) is a fundamental basketball technique in which a player uses their body to create and maintain position between an opponent and the basket when a shot is taken. The goal is to gain inside position for a rebound — preventing the opponent from getting to the ball first.
How to Box Out
When a shot is taken:
- Read the shot — Anticipate whether the ball will be short, long, or on the side
- Find your opponent — Identify the nearest offensive player (or the player you're responsible for)
- Make contact — Step in front of the opponent and make light legal contact
- Seal position — Establish a wide, low stance with feet shoulder-width apart and arms out, creating a wall between your opponent and the basket
- Attack the ball — Once sealed, go get the rebound with both hands and strong hands
Offensive vs. Defensive Boxing Out
- Defensive boxing out — Defenders box out offensive players to prevent offensive rebounds and secure the defensive rebound
- Offensive boxing out — Offensive players fight for inside position against defenders to tip or grab missed shots (offensive rebounds)
Why Boxing Out Matters
Rebounding is often called "winning the possession game." Teams that dominate the boards gain extra possessions (offensive rebounds) and limit opponents' second-chance points (defensive rebounds). Studies show that strong rebounding teams win significantly more games.
Second-chance points — Points scored from offensive rebounds — are among the most impactful statistics in basketball analytics.
