What is DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills)
DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is a set of short, standardized assessments used to measure the development of early literacy skills in children from kindergarten through 8th grade, primarily to identify students at risk of reading difficulties.
DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. It is a set of standardized, individually administered short assessments used to measure young students' development of early literacy skills and identify those at risk for reading difficulties. DIBELS is widely used in schools nationwide as a universal screening and progress monitoring tool, especially in the context of MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) and early reading intervention.
Purpose of DIBELS
DIBELS is designed to:
- Screen all students at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year to identify those at risk for reading failure
- Monitor progress of students receiving reading interventions (more frequent administration)
- Provide teachers with data to drive instruction
- Help schools evaluate the effectiveness of their core reading programs
Key DIBELS Measures
Each DIBELS measure is a brief, timed, 1-minute probe targeting a specific early literacy skill:
Letter Naming Fluency (LNF)
- Student names letters of the alphabet as quickly as possible
- Predicts reading readiness in early grades
Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF)
- Student segments spoken words into individual sounds (phonemes)
- Example: "cat" → /k/ /æ/ /t/
- Targets phonological awareness
Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF)
- Student reads made-up CVC words (e.g., "sot," "dab," "vuk")
- Measures alphabetic principle and phonics skills — decoding ability without memorized words
Oral Reading Fluency (ORF)
- Student reads an unfamiliar passage aloud for 1 minute
- Score = correct words per minute (CWPM)
- Measures reading fluency; the most widely used DIBELS measure in grades 1–6
Reading Comprehension (DAZE)
- Maze-style measure where students choose correct words from a passage with some words replaced
- Measures reading comprehension in grades 3+
Word Reading Fluency (WRF)
- Students read lists of words as quickly and accurately as possible
DIBELS Benchmark Categories
Students are categorized as:
- At or Above Benchmark — On track for reading success
- Below Benchmark — Some risk; may need supplemental support (Tier 2)
- Well Below Benchmark — High risk; needs intensive support (Tier 3)
DIBELS Versions
- DIBELS 6th Edition (original research version)
- DIBELS Next (updated version with additional measures)
- DIBELS 8th Edition (current version, released 2017, developed by the University of Oregon's DIBELS Data System)
DIBELS is available free of charge through the University of Oregon and through paid platforms that provide scoring and reporting systems.
