What is Playoff Seeding in Basketball
Playoff seeding in basketball refers to the ranking of teams that qualify for the postseason, which determines matchups and home court advantage.
Playoff seeding in basketball refers to the ranking assigned to each team that qualifies for the postseason. Seeds determine first-round matchups and, crucially, which team has home court advantage throughout the playoffs. The highest seed is #1 (best record) and the lowest is #8 (or #10 in the NBA's Play-In format).
How NBA Playoff Seeding Works
The NBA has 16 teams in the playoffs — 8 from the Eastern Conference and 8 from the Western Conference:
- Seeds 1–6: The top 6 teams in each conference by record automatically qualify
- Seeds 7–10: Teams ranked 7–10 in each conference compete in the Play-In Tournament to claim the 7th and 8th seeds
First-round matchups:
- #1 seed vs. #8 seed
- #2 seed vs. #7 seed
- #3 seed vs. #6 seed
- #4 seed vs. #5 seed
The higher seed always hosts the first game (and has home court advantage in the series).
Home Court Advantage
In a playoff series, the higher seed plays the majority of games at their home arena. In a 7-game NBA series format:
- The higher seed plays Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 at home (if needed)
- The lower seed plays Games 3, 4, and 6 at home (if needed)
Home court advantage is significant — home teams win a majority of playoff games historically.
How Seeds Are Determined
- Win-loss record — Best record in the conference = #1 seed
- Tiebreakers — Head-to-head record, division record, conference record are used in succession
Why Seeding Matters
- Top seeds avoid the Play-In Tournament and face weaker opponents early
- #1 seeds historically have a significantly higher Finals appearance rate
- Teams fight hard for the #4 vs. #5 seed line to avoid facing a top-2 team until the conference finals
The Play-In Tournament
Introduced permanently in 2021, the Play-In Tournament allows teams seeded 7–10 to compete for the final 2 playoff spots:
- 7 vs. 8: Winner gets the 7 seed; loser gets another chance
- 9 vs. 10: Loser is eliminated; winner faces the 7-8 loser
- Survivor game: Last chance to claim the 8 seed
