What is a Slam Dunk in Basketball

A slam dunk is a type of basketball shot where a player jumps and forcefully drives the ball downward through the basket with one or both hands.

A slam dunk (also called a dunk or stuff) is a type of field goal in basketball where a player leaps into the air and forcefully drives or throws the ball downward through the basket from above the rim. It is worth 2 points and is one of the most exciting and crowd-pleasing plays in the sport.

How a Slam Dunk Works

To execute a dunk, a player must be able to jump high enough to get their hand(s) above the rim (10 feet above the floor in professional and college basketball) while holding or guiding the ball into the hoop. The ball is then pushed or slammed through the net rather than shot in an arc.

Types of Dunks

  • One-handed dunk — Basic dunk with one hand
  • Two-handed dunk — Both hands on the ball for power; harder to block
  • Alley-oop — Teammate throws a lob pass near the basket; dunker catches and finishes in the air
  • Reverse dunk — Player dunks from below the rim, with the arm coming up from the other side
  • 360 dunk — Player spins a full rotation before dunking
  • Between-the-legs dunk — Ball passed between legs before slamming home; common in dunk contests
  • Windmill dunk — Arm swings in a windmill motion before dunking
