What Causes a Technical Foul
Technical fouls can be called for a wide range of infractions:
Player technical fouls:
- Arguing excessively with officials
- Taunting or trash-talking opponents
- Excessive celebrating (hanging on the rim, etc.)
- Using profanity or obscene gestures
- Delay of game violations
- Illegal defense (in some leagues/eras)
Coach technical fouls:
- Arguing with officials
- Leaving the coaching box during play
- Excessive complaints or gestures
Bench technical fouls:
- Non-players leaving the bench during a fight
- Team personnel behaving inappropriately
Penalties for a Technical Foul
In the NBA:
- The opposing team receives 1 free throw (attempted by any player on the court)
- The team that was fouled also retains possession
- Two technical fouls on the same player = automatic ejection
In college basketball (NCAA):
- The opposing team receives 2 free throws and possession
Flagrant Technical Foul
An unsportsmanlike technical (in FIBA/international rules) or an escalated technical can result in ejection without a second technical being required if the behavior is egregious enough.
Technical Foul Accumulation (NBA)
In the NBA, players who accumulate multiple technical fouls throughout the season face fines and suspensions:
- After 16 technical fouls in the regular season: 1-game suspension
- Additional suspensions for every 2 more technicals
